Round 10 Wrap

Melville consolidated top spot on the WACA first grade ladder with a nail-biting victory over Subiaco-Floreat at Tompkins Park on Sunday.

The match was reduced to 50 overs due to the torrid weather conditions earlier in the week affecting the pitch.

The Lions were bowled out for 223 with wickets shared between pace bowlers Steve Russell, Drew Porter and Tom Kerr-Shepperd.

Chasing 224 for first-innings points, the Storm reached their target in the last over with four wickets in hand.

Luke Towers (45) and Tom Scollay (46) gave Melville a solid platform, continuing their blistering form with a 92-run opening stand.

Retravision Warriors squad member Ryan Duffield showed his all-round talents with a quick-fire 39 not out late in the innings.

Duffield and keeper-batsman Andy Greig provided some late order hitting to get the Storm over the line in the final over of the day with three maximums.

Second grade lost their one-day fixture against Subiaco-Floreat at Floreat Oval.

Subiaco-Floreat batted first, making 9-212 from their 50 overs with Bolton top scoring with 55. In reply Melville fell 32 runs short of victory, finishing on 8-180.

Other fixtures from third grade to under 15s were cancelled.

Round 7 Wrap

First Grade

It was a week to remember for the storm with three out of four senior sides tasting victory including a brilliant outright away win by second grade against University.

Melville strengthened its position on top of the WACA first-grade ladder with a comfortable win over lowly ranked University at Tompkins Park.

The students simply had no answer for the potent opening combination of skipper Drew Porter (5-30) and Tom Kerr-Sheppard (3-20) as they were rattled for 135.

The home side made light work at University’s total – making 8-228 (declared) with Steve Russell top scoring with 51 and Porter chiming in with a well-made 38.

Porter’s declaration paid immediate dividends at the visitors struggled once again in their second innings.

University finished on 8-154 with leggie Ryan James the pick of the Melville bowlers with 4-62.

Kerr-Sheppard took another three scalps to take his match tally to six as the storm recorded a first-innings win.

Second Grade

Greg Turner was the hero for second grade, staking his claim for a return to the top side with an eight wicket haul at James Oval.

University were rolled for 60 on a pitch providing plenty for the seamers, with Melville dismissed for 63 later on day one.

Turner was in the wickets again in the second innings, this time it was Brad who did the damage with 4-24 as the home side could only manage 170.

Brendon Loth guided Melville to an outright defeat with a gutsy half-century.

The storm passed University’s total with four wickets in hand.

Third Grade

Thirds went down in a thrilling one-day fixture at Tompkins Park.

Melville lost the toss and was sent into bat by University, making a competitive 7-195 thanks to keeper-batsman Jono Carter (47) and Liam Kennedy (45).

The students got over the line with one wicket in hand, despite the best efforts of promising quick Kenny Nelson who took 4-44.

Melville has their chance to clinch victory in the final over, but a missed run out opportunity sealed their fate.

Forth Grade

Fours comprehensively defeated University in their one-day fixture at James Oval.

Melville batted first and posted a competitive 9-167 from their 45 overs, Stuart Nell (41) and Jake Baird (39) leading the way.

It was a fired up Melville that took the field with 15-year-old Josh Barrett the star of the show.

Barrett took an amazing 4-1 as University were dismissed for a less-than-impressive total of 66.

Round 7 Wrap

It was a tough weekend for the juniors with both sides suffering convincing defeats to centurions.

Under 17s

Melville has a positive start against their northern opponents at Tompkins Park.

Centurions were on the ropes at 3-11 before Quilty (40) and Taylor (32) steadied the ship.

Things went from bad to worse for the storm when Kaiden Fullgrabe came in to bat.

Fullgrabe made an unbeaten 76 to steer centurions to 9-252.

Adam Shaw was the pick of the bowlers with 3-32.

The hefty target never looked in sight for Melville, with Tim Smith (41) and Conor Miller-Chalmers (24) the only two batsmen to make starts.

Melville was dismissed for 156, well short of the centurions’ total.

Under 15s

Centurions batted first and were off the blocks quickly.

Skipper Jay O’Brien’s 75 was well supported by Inglis (42) and Devchand (39).

A score in excess of 300 was looking likely before the Melville bowlers pegged it back in the later overs.

It was a dismal run chase by the storm, falling well short of the 259 required for victory.

Melville finished on 8-131 in a disappointing day.
